ORIGAMI & ANDREW PHELAN

Origami & Andrew Phelan

Origami (aka George Cochrane) started playing music 15 years ago. He caught on to dance music in the mid-nineties and was quickly converted. In 1999, Origami launched newstylesound recordings to feature DJ2, his project with partner Delaney Parker. The label's first EP "Plural / Work It Out" quickly gathered international recognition. It was licensed for Eddie Richard's "Fabric: London" compilation and picked up for re-release on Grant Dell's label Pancake.

Origami has since followed up with a second DJ2 EP entitled "Another / Continuum" on newstylesound, two upcoming downtempo EP's and a full length CD with Cubik on Wide Hive Recordings, and a forthcoming indie/electronic hybrid solo album entitled "City Sky Life".

When playing out, Origami keeps his performances interactive, be it through DJ2's live PA of original material featuring a mix of bass, drums, and electronics, his solo DJ sets with a bass hanging on his shoulders, or his live bass work with production partner Andrew Phelan behind the decks.

Andrew Phelan (pronounced 'feelin') was raised on Chicago's underground house scene, influenced early by local jocks such as Derrick Carter, Sneak, Halo, and Justin Long. He began DJing in 1996, and soon found himself playing gigs all around the Midwest, including a residency at Chicago's Glow.

Five years after first hitting the decks, Andrew made the move to San Francisco, bringing his chunky, jazzy house sound with him. Andrew still makes regular trips home to play in Chicago, and has mixed across the US, including stops in Seattle, Miami, Portland, and Pittsburgh.

Outside of his live appearances, Andrew also records sets for Thump Radio. As a Thump DJ, he is heard by 50,000 people weekly on KBIG 104.3 in Los Angeles, appears nationwide on XM Satellite Radio's Channel 80: The Move, and has mixed sets for Alice 97.3 in San Francisco.

Together, Andrew Phelan & Origami bring a unique presence to their live performances, with Andrew on the decks and Origami live on bass, combining their backgrounds into a funk/tech house sound that stands apart. The two can be heard together monthly at their own party, "Folded", every first Friday at Anu in San Francisco.

In the studio, the duo have their first EP, entitled "Friday Night", upcoming on Turnaround-Sound with remixes from Chris Lum, Sen-Sei, and The Larrys. They have done remix work for Olive Records and newstylesound, and have upcoming releases on So Sound and Prismatic Tracks. Be on the look out for much more from this pair in the near future.
